Finolhu

Baa Atoll's most social island

Finolhu sits in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with around 1,200 reef species and Hanifaru Bay a 30-minute boat ride away. 125 villas spread across four islands, 79 with private pools. The resort wraps around two kilometres of white sand beach, anchored at one end by a sandbank that turns into a beach club at sunset. Energy here runs in both directions: genuinely social when the week calls for it, genuinely quiet when it doesn't. Kanusan, the Japanese restaurant, sits overwater. Travelife Gold certified.

About the Resort

Baa Atoll's most social island.

The name Finolhu means "sandbank" in Maldivian — and the sandbank is the point. It runs the length of the island, turning at one end into Crab Shack: toes in the sand, seafood, music when the mood takes it. The Beach Club picks things up from there through the evening. It's not every resort in the Maldives that has a genuine social scene. Finolhu has one, and it wears it well.

That said, 125 villas across four islands — 79 with private pools — gives the place enough space that you can ignore all of it. Beach, overwater, pool; the options run from a single-bedroom lagoon villa to a three-bedroom beach pool villa for nine.

Kanusan sits overwater, doing Japanese properly — sushi bar, classical and modern technique. Beach Kitchen handles breakfast and all-day international. Arabian Grill goes Middle Eastern and North African. Crab Shack keeps it honest on the sandbank.

Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to around 1,200 reef species and Hanifaru Bay — arguably the most reliable manta ray and whale shark site in the Maldives — a 30-minute boat ride away. The house reef is directly accessible. The Oceaneers' Club gives younger guests their own programme, which means parents actually get a holiday too.

Honest assessment

Who this resort fits, and who it doesn’t.

Best for
  • +Families who want a resort that genuinely caters for children — the Oceaneers' Club, large interconnecting villas, and six dining options make it one of the stronger family choices in the Maldives
  • +Couples who want a social resort with a real beach club scene, not just a quiet island
  • +Marine enthusiasts — UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, accessible house reef, and Hanifaru Bay 30 minutes away
  • +Guests who want variety — six dining venues and a broad activity programme give Finolhu more to do than most resorts at this level
Not the right fit if
  • ·Guests who want complete seclusion — 125 villas, a beach club, and a weekly entertainment programme mean Finolhu is never truly quiet
  • ·Those after an ultra-luxury, pared-back experience — the energy here is social and resort-forward, not minimalist
  • ·Travellers who want a short or simple transfer — a seaplane from Malé is the only way in
