Velaa Private Island

Noonu Atoll's most complete ultra-luxury island.

Velaa Private Island sets itself apart by doing things few Maldives resorts attempt. A 9-hole golf course designed by Major champion José María Olazábal, the Maldives' largest private wine cellar tucked inside a teppanyaki tower, and the country's only snow room spa — all on one island in Noonu Atoll, 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Six dining venues, residences by Patricia Urquiola and Winch Design, and a service culture built around anticipating rather than reacting. There is nothing quite like it in the archipelago.

About the Resort

Noonu Atoll's most complete ultra-luxury island.

Call it "majaa" — the Dhivehi spirit of joyful discovery — and you begin to understand what Velaa is after. The island doesn't do restraint. It packs a Major champion's golf academy, an Ayurvedic medical team, a professionally validated kids club, and one of the finest dining collections in the Maldives onto a single island in Noonu Atoll and somehow makes none of it feel crowded.

Dining moves between registers with ease. Aragu is the fine-dining anchor — East-meets-West cuisine with piano accompaniment, the kind of room that earns its reputation before you've seen the menu. Athiri takes a more generous approach: chefs from 14 nations cooking global dishes with local Maldivian ingredients, open for leisurely lunches and casual evenings. CRU leans into champagne and rare vintages, guided by sommeliers who know the cellar well — and the cellar itself, the Maldives' largest private collection, is tucked inside the Tavaru teppanyaki tower, a theatrical dining experience that doubles as one of the island's most compelling detours.

The wellbeing programme, Eveylaa, runs deeper than most resort spas. Ayurvedic tradition meets modern diagnostics — specialist doctors, physiotherapy, food sensitivity testing, and personalised plans drawn from Faiy's garden-sourced nutrition programme. Alongside the Maldives' only snow room, there is yoga, sound healing, breathwork, and Cloud 9 and Dream Pod experiences, all delivered with a philosophy that genuine care has no schedule.

Lha Velaa, the kids club, is validated by Worldwide Kids and the Luxury Childcare Association — cooking classes, island quests, climbing structures, and the kind of organised unpredictability children remember. And for those after the opposite, the Romantic Residence is one bedroom accessible only by boat, removed from the rest of the island entirely.

Villa Categories

Villas

Beach and overwater options run side by side, all one-bedroom, all with private pools, all oriented toward different qualities of light and water. The beach villas sit within tropical gardens with outdoor dining gazebos, zen garden atriums, and direct sand access; the overwater villas extend along private jetties with sun decks and steps dropping into the lagoon. The Sunset Deluxe adds a private bar and wine fridge to the terrace; the Deluxe Beach Pool Villa offers the most generous footprint of the four.

223–313 m² · 1 bedroom · 2 adults

Houses

The two-bedroom Houses pair two detached bedroom wings — each fully private — connected by a shared living room with kitchenette and wine bar. The Beach Pool House adds a shallow wading area alongside the main pool for families; the Ocean Pool House goes overwater, with a sunken hot tub in its second gazebo and steps leading directly into the lagoon from the terrace.

493–581 m² · 2 bedrooms · 4 adults

The Romantic Residence

Reachable only by boat, the Romantic Residence sits apart from the rest of the island in the most literal sense. One bedroom, a 17-metre pool, an outdoor dining gazebo on a private floating jetty, a personal gym, and an in-villa spa treatment room — all for two, with a private chef and butler on call. Distance from everything is the point.

598 m² · 1 bedroom · 2 adults

Residences

Four four-bedroom residences — Nika, Kuredhi, Funa, and Nirolhu — occupy private beach stretches at the scale of a small estate. Each holds a 17-metre pool, a private gym, multiple gazebos, and four en-suite bedrooms opening onto terraces with direct ocean views. Nika was designed by Patricia Urquiola, its interiors built around custom Craaft lamps and handmade Taiping carpets; Kuredhi centres on a five-metre dining table in rare black marble alongside a separate paddling pool; Nirolhu adds a hammam and a dramatic private courtyard.

Honest assessment

Who this resort fits, and who it doesn’t.

Best for
  • +Foodies and wine lovers — six restaurants anchored by the Maldives' largest private wine cellar and a teppanyaki tower, with a fine-dining room that holds its own against any city restaurant
  • +Golfers — a Major champion-designed Par-3 course with PGA coaching and TrackMan, genuinely rare for a Maldives resort
  • +Honeymooners and couples — the Romantic Residence, accessible only by boat, is one of the most private accommodations in the archipelago
  • +Families with children — a professionally validated kids club, shallow wading pool, and four-bedroom residences with paddling pools give families real infrastructure rather than an afterthought
Not the right fit if
  • ·Those wanting all-inclusive — with six individually priced restaurants and bars, dining costs add up significantly beyond the room rate
  • ·Those wanting an adults-only atmosphere — families are actively catered for, with a kids club, wading pools, and family residences throughout the property
  • ·Those on a tighter budget within the luxury bracket — as one of the Maldives' most amenity-rich ultra-luxury properties, the nightly rates and à la carte dining place it firmly at the top of the price range
